Meet the team...
In Lower Key Stage 2, children are taught in three separate classes; Oak, Maple and Willow. Each class has a mix of Year 3 and 4 children and although children learn within their own classes for the majority of the week, cross-phase learning is planned for each term to share the expertise of the three class teachers and two Learning Support Assistants.
Children are encouraged to grow as independent learners, building on the skills they have developed during the early part of their school life. Risk taking and problem solving opportunities are planned into all learning. Achievements both in and out of school are celebrated and shared daily within classes and weekly in our phase group assemblies. Children are encouraged to share all successes and make links between skills and values they have learnt at school and during other activities out of school.
We are lucky enough to have two enhanced curriculum opportunities throughout the academic year. All children in Year 3 have guitar tuition weekly with a qualified guitar teacher. This opportunity to learn one instrument over a longer period of times means that children are able to play and compose a variety of tunes using both notes and chords by the end of the year. Year 4 children are taken to Sir Herbert Leon on a weekly basis and have three qualified adults working with them when learning to swim. Many children who could not swim - and some whom were scared of water before the year began - have moved quickly through the groups and are now able to swim unaided in the deep end! Thursday afternoons are certainly looked forward to by both year groups of children.
We aim to make visits to a variety of places during the year and also invite visitors in to develop our understanding of half-termly topic learning. Past experiences we have taken part in: a trip to see Peter Pan at MK Theatre linked to our English learning, have visited Whipsnade Zoo to look at animals from different Commonwealth countries and have toured Cadbury World to see if they REALLY follow the principles of Fairtrade.
